What a powerful one line reflection for Good Friday and one I shall store in my armoury. Like scripture, it cuts right to the core of the matter in so few words. Thank you for posting that David – I shall be dwelling on it this whole week-end!
‘Release from bondage’ might be the snappiest gospel description. Some people love their addictions too much to be released; others are not aware of their enslavement; some think they are predestined to hell (or to just never coming to a knowledge of the truth). Isaiah 55 strikes a balance: God is unknowably mysterious, but the divine offer and invitation are nevertheless true, as well as being testable and entirely dependable. I had never really thought about how entrapped and powerless the penitent thief was. There may be shades here of the core theme in ‘Man’s Search for Meaning’ by Viktor Frankl (i.e. we retain a right of inner choice or reaction, whatever the outward circumstances or problems we are facing?).
