Greg Sheridan , always interesting ! Like you , my Protestant sensitivities were tweaked when he mentioned the intercession of St Jude , but I am older now , although I wish I could add , wiser ! Also, with the number of Reformers he has read and gives reference to , I find him a considerable liberated evangelical despite his alignment with Rome.
With his reference to the “minor differences” he is right in dismissing them as of lesser importance .
A number of years ago I had the privilege of being involved in transporting much needed supplies and aids to Poland , during the “solidarnosc” crisis . Russia ( with , how it viewed itself as overseer of the Warsaw Pact ) was then , only a whisper away of doing what we are seeing in Ukraine today.
No coincidence , at that time a Son of Poland, Karol Wojtyla held the Papacy in Rome. Although he voiced his understandable concern , it was not his statements that impressed me . It was the number of church run institutions manned by nuns , looking after , and caring for the rejected and neglected in society that spoke to me. I saw a broken and disfigured humanity that I had could never imagine in my wildest dreams , being tended to , by a love that was not of this world. Today , holding to my reformed evangelicalism , my thoughts are tempered by such memories .
Philippians Ch3 v7-10
7 But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. 8 What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in[a] Christ – the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith.
