Sunday Catechism 23 – The Offices of Christ

SC 23 – What are the offices of Christ? And how do they work in terms of his humiliation and exaltation?

The Sunday Catechism 22 – How did Christ, being God, become man?

  1. If Jesus is God why do we need him to intercede as High Priest on our behalf before God.
There is one mediator between God and man the man Christ Jesus.
When Jesus was on this earth he was truly human, in every way. Heb 2:14,17. After his death and resurrection he was and still is the firstborn of the new creation, the first fruits of a harvest of believers in Him who will also rise from the grave. He is the glorified and appointed King of Kings and Lord of Lords. He fulfilled God’s covenant with David and rules on David’s throne until all the purposes of God are fulfilled.
    See 1 Cor 15: 27-28, 49.

    1. Your first question doesn’t make sense. It is precisely BECAUSE Jesus is God that he can intercede on our behalf. There is no contradiction in that.

Yes Jesus was fully human in every way – and he was fully God. Hebrews was written to deal with heresies and backslidings which you are putting forward. Jesus is the Son of God. The most basic creed of Christianity was ‘Jesus is Lord’….that is Yahweh. Your citation of Scripture is distorted and unbalanced….but I suspect you will just keep going. Perhaps Hebrews 3:12 is apposite for you?

      1. Because Jesus lives forever , he has a permanent priesthood. Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.
My understanding of this great verse is that God is the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of Moses and the Prophets, who revealed himself in the burning bush as Yahweh and who made a covenant with David that he would raise up a descendant of his to sit on his throne forever.
Peter on the day of Pentecost preached to the crowd that God made this same Jesus both Lord and Messiah. Prophet, Priest and King.
