The Sunday Catechism 21 – Who is the Redeemer of God’s Elect?

This is the first of two questions looking at our Saviour. In a brilliant and succinct form it summarises the person, and nature of the God who became man, and who remains the God/man….

  1. Question ❓ Why does the gospels give Jesus a genealogy, actually two, from David, if he came from heaven.
What is the purpose of them?
For me the Incarnation doctrine destroys the fact of the Abrahamic and Davidic Covenants. Is Jesus truly the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the promised seed that God preserved would come when the time was right? Is Deut. 6:4 wrong? Is Jehovah a myth? Will Jesus not hand back the Kingdom to God the Father so that God will be all and in all? 1 Cor 15:48.

    1. Clearly Luke, Matthew, the apostles, Paul and Jesus did not think that the doctrine of the incarnation destroys the Abrahamic and Davidic covenants. Rather Christ fulfills them. The purpose of the genealogies is to show the human ancestry of Christ – who is both God and Man….
