  1. As a resident of the southern hemisphere, I can’t see that Harry and Meghan spending their time between England and North America is really a case of “geographic balance”. 🙂

Francis Chan didn’t know what changes the Reformation brought?

And he’s wrong about there being “over 30,000 Christian denominations”. Such figures come from lists of the number of church organisations, not denominations. So the Victorian Baptists are counted separately to the New South Wales Baptists. And if a denomination starts a church in another country, and when that church is able to stand on its own feet and become a national church, separate from the church that started it, that would count as another one. For that matter, and ironic given his claim of there only being one church prior to the Reformation, the Australian Catholic church is counted separately to the United States Catholic church!

What did you say previously about fact-checking?

  2. David,

John 6 contains some fairly strong words about the Eucharist…Jesus even lost some of his disciples over them. The Didache (pre-Constantine) seems to show an important role for the Eucharist as well. I feel that it is indeed more than merely symbolic.

Mark 14 and 1 Corinthians 11 also instruct us that the Lord’s Supper is not to be taken lightly.

My question to you is what is the proper balance between trivializing Communion (as some denominations do), and over-emphasis on Communion?

On another note, thank you very much for the fine fiddling video…it put a smile on my face!

    1. Thanks. I don’t think the communion is just a symbol. I do think it is central to the Christian faith. I don’t think it is the literal body and blood of Jesus. The proper balance is the biblical one!

      1. Does that imply that your perspective is the biblical one and anyone who disagrees is wrong? The issue is that the ‘biblical’ balance is not clear – nor is it formed by one person – so immediately we have different takes on it.

Perhaps the magic is in the personal acknowledgement and conviction of God’s love – whether that is conveyed through more liberal or conservative interpretations.

  3. From what I understand there are several errors in Francis Chan’s clip.
Unless I’ve badly misunderstood him is he really suggesting there were no priests leading worship in the pre-reformation Catholic church? The Catholic Church has a hierarchy of priests, all the way to the pope so I really don’t get what he’s talking about.
It’s been a while since I looked at this but I’m sure there was more than one denomination. The CoS and Baptist church are 2 denominations but I’d still say it is the one Church – the bride of Christ.

  4. Thanks for the Jim Daily video and filling a lacuna in my knowledge of Scottish music.

The Celtic musical provenance of this short piece hopefully justifies this quid pro quo :
