Sorry to hear that the Brethren have been in the news ( The Daily Mail UK ) for all the wrong reasons. While serving my apprenticeship in the late 60’s my Boss was Brethren. Throughout my time working with him , and knowing his wife and family I can not say one word against him. He came under fire a great deal from others for his stand for Christ , and certainly took some stick during the Jim Taylor episode , particularly from one of his staff who was studying for a “biblical degree” in a certain secular organisation. When I came to faith I learned a great deal from my Brethren Boss although we differed and argued on many issues .
Although several of his associate Brethren had hotels or boarding houses he was not a rich man , in worldly terms . He and his wife added to their income by taking in boarders within their tied accommodation. He worked hard , was a fair and a kind Boss , and when the Brethren eventually folded in our community , our town was the poorer. You made remark in last weeks Beauty for Ashes , 1 Cor 10, 12 Wherefore let him that thinketh he stands , take heed lest he fall. I guess that also applies to many of our churches.
