Christianity Evangelism Preaching the Church Theology

Happy 100th Birthday Dick Lucas!

I don’t know him well and have only met him a few times, but Dick Lucas has had a great impact on me….not least the encouragement that he is still going strong at 100!  This is a video we made when he preached at St Peters..Apparently it is no longer available on YouTube, so I am just reissuing it.

I know that Dick had an enormous influence on Tim Keller and many others.

I have a few anecdotes I would love to tell – but perhaps they should wait until another day….

I was deeply moved when he came and sat beside me in Glasgow at a conference and said “dear boy, I’m so glad to see you are still alive”! ”  Before going on to offer some other words of encouragement and challenge – but they shall remain private!

I would say that many of my views on evangelism and church and preaching have been influenced by him.  A gracious and Godly man….

  1. I remember one thing he said the only time I heard him preach “live” and met him. He said about a lot of the new atheist books inc Dawkins, “Don’t bother reading that rubbish” or to that effect. It shocked s few people but I think his counsel was wise. There is a place for engaging opposing ideology – as you have done with Dawkins but young Christians can become consumed with reading to engage every thing out there when they would benefit more from nourishing food.

  2. I walked the dogs this morning while listening to a Dick Lucas sermon from 1983, downloaded to my iPhone from the wonderful St Helens Resource centre.
I started medical college in London in 1967 as a very fragile and untaught Christian. The church where I grew up preached “boy scout” Christianity (I promise on my honour to do my best ….). I was taken by members of the Christian Union to Sunday Night at 8 where Dick regularly preached. This was mainly for students. I was blown away by what I heard – clear logical exposition of the bible. I had been waiting for this for all of my (then) short life. What I learned under Dick changed and shaped my life. A common saying of his was that the best Sunday lunch was Roast preacher. That is, listen to what was said by the preacher then discuss it over lunch, pull it apart, and ask questions to be sure that what he had said was correct. That is, USE YOUR MIND AND THINK CHRISTIANLY.
Happy birthday Dick Lucas, and I thank God for your ministry. There were others of course, e.g. John Stott, and The Doctor although I never actually heard him in the flesh, bur read his books.
    Wow! What a privilege.
