In a few weeks the Paris Olympics will start. 100 years ago, another Scotsman favoured to win the 100m race at the previous Paris Olympics chose not to run because the heats were on the Sunday – his Sabbath. Of course, Eric Liddel set an example that has echoed through the years much longer than if he had run and won the 100m race. Instead, of course, he won the 400m for which he had little previous form and has been celebrated in the movie Chariots of Fire and its theme was part of the 2012 Opening Ceremony for the London Olympics. While it may have been artistic licence, the movie had an American athlete passing a note to Eric s they lined up for the 400m final – the note said: ‘God will honour those who honour Him.’
