  1. The ancient Celtic Church (rather than a dove) tended to use the wild goose as a symbol (or metaphor) for the Spirit of Christ. Few of us understand jet propulsion or air navigation while our jet flight passes over Greenland. Fewer still (if anyone) can comprehend the mystery of goose migration. But geese are real, and they appear in the Hebrides each autumn after a flight from their Arctic feeding-breeding season. The spiritual presence of Christ (as in John 3:8), turning up unexpectedly or unpredictably, is maybe cannily alluded to in the Celtic Church symbol. Whether the Arctic geese ever get to Australia is maybe less clear!
