In this weeks Quantum I look at 12 times I have changed my mind about something…..the EU;  Israel and the Jews;  Democracy; Scottish Independence;  Immigration; Socialism;  Education; Climate Change and Al Gore;  Islam; Transgender Ideology; Equality before the Law; Netflix.  And the final word from Acts 28. with music from Europe, Dave Alvin, Leonard Cohen;  Dougie Maclean, Pink Floyd; Supertramp; and Robert Plant.

Please note that the news of the attack on the Jews in Manchester came too late for this weeks podcast….but it backs up precisely what I am saying….

Here is the music used in this months podcast on Spotify….

  1. I’ve just got to your sections on the EU and Israel and the Jews. With regard to the EU it was not perfect but withdrawal has cost every British family dearly. It is the economic elephant in the room – with few politicians willing to accept responsibility and admit the disaster. I don’t think Europe will let us back in.

Regarding Israel – why conflate it to the Jews? The situation at present is that any criticism of Israel equates to antisemitism. This is extremely dangerous thinking. What Israel is doing is unacceptable and illegal – and a large proportion of the Jewish population worldwide agree. I think you will find that the Nazi comparison comes from the philosophy of disproportionate force which the Israelis are currently using in the Middle East.

As regards the Trump initiative – how would you feel if your terms and conditions as a minister were negotiated without your input? The fact that the people of Palestine have not been asked what they want is a glaring omission which endangers the whole process.

Finally I know you keep an eye on the finger on the pulse – and I’m heartened to see that you know the background as to what happened with the horrendous attack in Manchester (remember this could just as easily have been a church, mosque or school rather than a synagogue). You are to be congratulated on being well ahead of the game. I have friends in the police in Manchester and they don’t know yet what has happened. It’s good to know someone does.

    1. 1) The EU was and is a totalitarian anti-democratic institution. And no withdrawal has not cost every British family dearly…Germany and other EU countries are doing just as badly if not worse. Don’t believe all the propaganda.

      2) What you describe as the situation at present…isn’t. And it is utterly disgusting that you defend the calling of Jews, Nazis. Your ideology is blinding you.

      3) The people of Palestine are never asked…They are run by a terrorist organisation….Its beyond bizarre that you equate a peace deal in the Middle East with a job interview!

      4) Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit. Or maybe you just struggle with basic comprehension….I have a sneaking suspicion that a Syrian Muslim called ‘Jihad from Syria’ attacking a synagogue on Judaism’s holiest day might have been more inclined to attack a synagogue than a mosque! Your ‘friends in the police’ in Manchester who have informed you that they have no idea what has happened – should probably seek another job. No one can be that dumb!

      1. So much for my dumb police friends. It pays to assess a situation fully. Now the facts are emerging – so is a different picture. Like yourself speculating here but I’m wondering how much the suspect has been let down by inadequate mental health services provision

      2. Yes – imagine not working out that a Syrian man called ‘Jihad’ who attacks a synagogue might have something to do with Islam?! I’m not speculating….but, as you admit, you are. Apparently it has nothing to do with Islam…just mental illness! Its not the poor mans fault – he was just ‘let down by inadequate mental health services provision’!

  2. As a balance to the testimony of the journalist interviewing the suicide bomber your readers may like to check out the recent BBC documentary by Mr Theroux and the various clips available in the internet of settler behaviours – including harassment, violence and murder. They are also chilling.

  3. Netflix: “Not with my money, you’re not. I’m out. I’m done.”

    Hi David,

Your remarks about cancelling your Netflix subscription set me thinking. Here are a few questions that came to mind:

    1. When we purchase a good or service, when the contract is complete, our money as a purchaser is no longer ours; it becomes the property of the seller. And he, not we, are responsible for how he uses “his” money (and we are responsible for how we use “my” good or service. So, when I subscribe to Netflix, it’s no longer “my money,” is it?

    2. What if we apply your apparent principle to other transactions where believers relate to a godless society. To take an extreme example, should we refrain from paying taxes because we are sure that some of those taxes will be used to fund abortions through Medicare? What about other transactions, where we give “our money” to people not knowing what they will do with it? Do we partake in their sinful use of it?

    3. What relevance to this has the passages in Rom.14 and 1Cor.10? In the latter (vs.23-33), Paul envisages a situation where an unbeliever invites a Christian to dinner, and serves up food. Paul says, “Don’t raise any question [about the origin o f the food] on the ground of conscience.” And what if someone says, “This food was offered in a pagan sacrifice [before it was sold in the meat market]?” Paul says, in that case don’t eat it. Why? Not because it is “tainted” spiritually, but for the sake of the one who told you, lest his [weak] conscience be offended by your eating. Or, in Romans, don’t cause your weak-in-faith brother, or unconverted man, to stumble in unbelief. If we can give thanks (v.30) for [some!] Netflix media, then we have liberty of conscience for that. If we cannot, we should indeed unsubscribe. But Paul doesn’t say or imply that it’s intrinsically sinful to eat that sacrificial food. (Sorry for the long exposition: you could probably put it more succinctly!)

    Yours in Christ,

    Peter

    1. Thanks Peter…

      1) Misses the point. I pay a monthly subscription to Netflix. Given how Netflix are choosing to use that money I have decided not to give them any more.
      2) Again misses the point. Taxes are not voluntary. Netflix subs are. And yes if we do give money to people who then misuse it we are partly responsible. If we don’t know, we don’t know….but with Netflix we now do.
      3) Your application doesn’t work. If I was visiting a home and someone wants me to watch a film on Netflix with them, I am free to do so. But being able to give thanks for something someone does, doesn’t excuse approving other things that they do that are sinful. If a prostitute gives money to a poor child, that doesn’t mean I have to approve of her prostitution!

      1. Thanks for your replies, brother.
I reckon you’re missing the points, but won’t prolong the discussion! Let readers consider both approaches, and form their own judgments.
        Blessings.

      2. Thanks Peter….but I’m confused about missing the points….I answered your points….feel free to let me know where I got it wrong…am always happy to be corrected!

  4. Thankyou David, another great Quantum, next week about the church, what about Dame Sarah Mullally?
