The Bishop and the Gospel….

In the providence of God yesterday my Coffee with John was this one on 1 John 4:5 – as it happened I did not know about Bishop Budde and her political diatribe against Trump in what was summoned to a service of unity and prayer for the President and nation.   Of course the world loved her sermon – because as John says – she is of the world.

And so today here is the next one -…. Astonishing how up to date and relevant the Bible is….if only those who are supposed to teach it – actually did so!

  1. G’day. I was very interested to hear what you had to say about Bishop Budde. Whether or not she is a “Christian” do you think the content of what she said to Mr Trump holds no relevance to how Christians lead their lives and interact together? The fact that the Trump regime fails to see that for whatever reason gender assignment issues exist (therefore have been created) and is breaking migrant families (the Biblical institution of the family) apart are but two illustrations of this. Bishop Budde may not be a “Christian”, but she has the presence of mind to see and point out to the most powerful man in the world that he is not following what the Bible teaches.

    1. Thanks Lee Ann – of course you can take something out of anything, but that does not negate the overall teaching. She was not holding Trump up to the values of the BIble – which she herself does not follow. I note you use the term Trump ‘regime’…that is unnecessary hyperbole and exaggeration. Trump was elected. And you are also wrong to say that the gender assignment issues are not recognised by the US government. If Bishop Budde is not a Christian then she is a great hypocrite…

      1. She was too political in my view. A bit racist when describing migrants and she missed a massive opportunity to preach the gospel to all including those she claimed to speak for. There could have been a message of hope and salvation with a note that will help to carry burdens if you ask him.

  2. I think President Trump gave the right response: a bit boring, which it was. It was also entirely predictable given what I know about ECUSA these days and inappropriate given the setting and purpose of this church service.

  3. Somebody definitely dropped the ball at the planning stages with this woke heretical woman bishop being given the pulpit to unleash her naive assumptions and godless ideology on the Trump party attending that service. Did they not know?
The very fact that it was to be an Episcopalian service should have been enough to set alarm bells ringing.

  4. A cheap shot at Trump? The storming of the Capitol, and other issues, mean concern about Trump is fair. But this was surely the blessing of a new US national leader in a public church service? The Anglican Church has plenty of its own scandals. John Smyth, Mike Pilavachi, Jonathan Fletcher. Bishops should mind their own business and deal with the mess in the Church. Inquiries into Pilavachi-New Wine, Pilavachi-Soul Survivor and John Smyth QC (in Africa and UK) have been, or are being, completed. The Church needs to look in the mirror. Welby and Carey are away. Cottrell looks set to go.

  5. If Bishop Budde aspires to speak “truth to power” perhaps best to direct her remarks to her scandal ridden colleagues in the Anglican hierarchy.
Many thanks to David Robertson for his well balanced biblical commentary on this episode.

  6. you david robertson are a racist woke bigot like donald trump and the bishop shows more christian values then you will ever will

    1. Always love that ‘racist woke’ bit….you need to think of some other insults! This one is a bit contradictory….I suspect I won’t be taking lessons on Christian values from someone who uses such language….!

  7. I was saddened that some people at my church took hold of the ‘refugee’ aspect of this ‘sermon’ to the detriment of not wishing to find out anything about this godless women or her denomination.

May the Lord preserve me from playing that game too, because it is always a temptation to sign up to a particular party, believing them to be on the Lord’s side.

  8. I am astonished at your statement –
“I don’t need to read her biography”
“I don’t need to read her book although I probably shall”
So you have the bravado to call this woman a false teacher – while hardly knowing anything about her.
What happened to the scripture “judge not that ye be not judged” and the mote in thy sister’s eye?
Trump has arisen from a heretical sect of evangelicalism – white nationalists – who see him as the Cyrus of the OT.
But it has nothing of the gospel about it. Trump is about money money money – all for him. The evangelicals who have created him are the REAL heretics – not the bishop.
    PS
fellow dundonian – broughty baptist (a long way from southern baptist)

    1. Don’t be astonished. I call her a false teacher because of her teaching. She denies the atonement, the uniqueness of Christ, the Bible etc….

The scripture ‘judge not that ye be not judged’ is one of the most misquoted and misused verses in Scripture, often used, as you are doing, to judge others!

Ironically you then, I suspect without having read any biography of Trump (what was that about judging?) state that he arose from a heretical sect of evangelicalism – white nationalists. Yet Trump did not come from evangelicalism (he was a progressive liberal Democrat) and white nationalism (whatever that is) has very little to do with either him or evangelicalism. As for being Cyrus – you are aware that Cyrus was a pagan king?

Why do you feel the need to be pejorative about Southern Baptists? What was that about judging? You see the problem here?

It is better to judge things by the Word of God – and not our own social or political prejudices…

I hope you are the right kind of Dundonian (Dark Blue!)….or then I really will judge you!

  9. i have been holding off replying – because i don’t really enjoy arguing with strangers on the internet.
but i just saw the trump gaza video. you just need to google those words.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5HlrkLQWnc
there is a giant gold statue of trump in it.
    big deal.
    but trump shared it
    Nebuchadnezzar anyone ?
    or the golden calf
trump ticks about 90% of the tick boxes for the antichrist.
(i don’t really do that algebraic line – but it is interesting in this case given that his evangelical followers probably do)
the bishop – i think – ticks none

    1. Yes – I am fully aware of Trump’s ridiculous and blasphemous video….and no, Trump is not The AntiChrist….and yes the bishop still teaches anti-Christian doctrines…
