  1. I find myself a mixture of emotions when it comes to the Steve Lawson tragedy, He has become known to me only as the events of the last few days have unfolded.; I probably share much with him theologically. My first and abiding emotion is grief. Grief that the name of God is dishonoured. Grief that the gospel is undermined. Grief that the faith of some will be shaken. Grief for his devastated church. Grief that families close both to him and the woman will be deeply traumatised. Grief for the young woman who has acted foolishly. Grief for a man whose many years of service have been tainted and tarnished by the foolishness of later years. And perhaps grief for the lionizing of preachers and the development of lifestyles that perhaps lead to them being way from home too often. Grief that so many high profile preachers seem to fail though in truth the percentage is probably small. Grief that mass media heralds the story to the world.

I should perhaps feel more anger. Anger is not wrong here as long as it doesn’t become consuming and bitter. Perhaps anger would be better directed at Satan who ensnares God’s people and aspects of a culture that make straying easy.

I want to turn from grief to joy. Not joy about the relationship but joy that whatever hellish forces attack the church Christ will overcome them and build his church. Joy that there seem to be good men handling the situation. Joy that the relationship seems to have stopped short of actual adultery. Joy that the gravest of sins can be forgiven if we bring them to the Lord. Joy that I belong to a God who forgives sins.

I have probably missed some important angles. These are just a few of my thoughts.
