Long time since I first heard that song, as an impressionable 15 year old in 1974. I suddenly realised that country music could be cool. But what a waste, not only of his talent but his life. I gave away my copy of the biography of Parsons, aka Cecil Ingram Connor: “Twenty Thousand Roads”. It was so sad and at times so dark it was almost unbearable. A lot of the same could be said of Townes Van Zandt, an even more vulnerable character but to my mind with a more substantial and interesting oeuvre. At least Townes managed to survive to age 53, though increasingly ravaged. Both from very wealthy privileged backgrounds. I don’t think Parsons stayed long enough at Harvard to imbibe much of the theology, whether good or bad, that he was supposed to be reading

I know nothing about it – but it sounds disgusting – and it is nothing new. Sadly these kind of scandals have always dogged the church – as they have the rest of society…
Out of curiosity – If the occasion/need ever arose, would you feel perfectly comfortable placing your child/grandchild in the care of the Church?

I would use my head and think – not just rely on prejudice. Child abuse has been reported in every sphere of life. THere is no evidence that it is more likely in the church…

Do you believe that thinking is what has been traditionally lacking from every other parent that trusted their church and had their child abused and raped by Pastors, Priests etc?
How would a parent go about deciding whether or not to leave their child in the care of their church in today’s climate?
The same way they would leave their child in a school, sports club etc. Take due diligence. Contrary to your prejudiced assumption child abuse is not rife in churches.
These days, yes, I am fairly certain they would take due diligence! My question was more to highlight the falsity of the position of trust the Church traditionally engendered, and the unfortunate fact that such trust is no doubt woefully lacking in today’s climate.
On the Scottish church closures. Not only is the Church of Scotland comfortable with the Scottish Government, it appears to value its cosy meetings with Government ministers, more than it does meeting together in the name of Jesus.
Of course you can ask. Although you would probably fall out of your pulpit if I ever donated to your ”cause”
As you are probably aware I am not a great fan of religion and hearing of the closure of churches is music to my ears!
However, and it is a big however – that you are being bullied with the intent of deplatforming you – I think this is the correct term, yes? – is simply wrong and flies in the face of everything that Free Speech and the Democratic Process stand for.
You should be allowed to speak up on matters you feel strongly about.
The more we hear from religious people across all faiths, and especially from professional pastors like yourself , the more familiar and better educated about religion and religious worldviews the average person in the street will become.

This is the next step on from those posters last year. Where are the protest marches in the streets? Has Scotland really fallen this low?
In Australia, one of the arguments for decriminalising sodomy in states like Tasmania – which seems like aeons ago now even though it was only the 1990s, such has been the moral shift – was that it was unenforceable because you couldn’t police what was going in the privacy of people’s own homes. It looks like the SNP has the answer though!
Seriously, at the rate things are developing and the extremism that is emerging with increasingly restrictive laws, it seems like real persecution is a distinct possibility for some of us in coming decades.
