Re: Abortion.
As this issue is never likely to go away would it not be better to invest time, energy and resources to further advance medical applications that simply help shut down the biological functions of reproduction until a child is genuinely wanted?
There are available several excellent means of contraception, including implants.
Surely making such contraception more readily available – along with removing the stigma attached in certain cases – in addition to increased efforts in sex ed. would be better in the long run rather than trying to bring down the (excuse the term) wrath of god – which effectively demonizes all those who are party to abortion.
Or are you against contraception as well?
Ark , Today the BBC has just brought to the nations attention that a record of 200,000 abortions have taken place in England and Wales in the past twelve months. Do you have no concern.?
Channel 5 entertains it’s viewers with immature ,and (in my opinion) deeply unhappy teenage students, who see little value in themselves , boastfully supplementing their student loan or grant to see them through university by selling themselves for sex . In any society , however impoverished ( and we are far from it) do you find that acceptable?
I am so pleased that you look in on this site Ark , because of its content in Christ , and I do pray that you will understand sooner rather than later , but instead of being picky and often making snide comment please , in your wisdom , contribute by offering a better solution to the world’s dilemma’s than is offered by Christ !

Can you please fix the link to the Vatican story. When I click on the link it takes me to the BBC story about the 99 year-old man who wants people to think he is a woman.
But on the same page as the story about the unfortunateley confused gentleman, there is a link to a story, “Birmingham LGBT protests worry children.” Surprise, surprise, the BBC is not eactly supporting the parents. Or even being neutral. I was in a hospital waiting area the other day and the TV was showing a BBC programme. I only caught a few words but the BBC person seemed to be very hostile towards the Moslem parents.
PS. Today new advertising codes banning gender stereotypes are to take effect. Presumably all adverts for female hygiene products will have to feature men.
Not all Catholics are giving their full support to the Vatican’s document on gender theory. The usual suspects among those who traditionally dissent from Church teaching on anything related to sex are obviously none too pleased. But there is also some concern being expressed among those who, for want of a better term, might be described as traditionalists.

I think it could be reasonably said that contraception has never been more widely available than it is at the moment. This does suggest that making contraception more widely available is not likely to have much effect on the number of abortions.
If contraception is as widely available as you say ( and I am not for one moment suggesting it isn’t), to what do you attribute the high abortion rate?

here’s me butting in again. There are so many abortions for a number of reasons as far as I can make out.
• Availability.
• Society’s preoccupation with a person’s rights over their own body.
• Determinations of start-of-life that have more to do with enabling a physician to get round their hippocratic oath than with anything else.
• Great latitude in determining necessity ‘for the mother’s health.’
• Perception of abortion as a ‘cure’ for social ills and genetic impairment.
• Fears of overpopulation.
• Misconception that the world would benefit if humanity were to disappear.

Everything can be seen as a statistic, be it the number of abortions or the numbers that died because of the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
I wonder what the stats are for the number of women who have died as a result of being denied an abortion?
My wife would certainly have been one such ”statistic” and also a friend who had an ectopic pregnancy and would likely had died (according to the gynecologist) had it not been for the timely intervention of a doctor at a local hospital here in Johannesburg.
Sorry, Gylen, sin is a religious term and is meaningless unless you are able to demonstrate the existence of Yahweh, and that he deemed certain actions as ‘sin’.

I don’t see any more or less love because of the advances in technology and the financial rewards this may bring.
Your example, while certainly distressing from my point of view is not definitive of our society.
However feel free to demonstrate your assertion with evidence and I am more than willing to retract.

Again, I am very interested in any evidence you can put forward to demonstrate the veracity of your statement.

Ark, I do accept your point on statistics and that your usage was in appropriate context in what you were saying. Let me also add that the concern for your wife in the situation of an ectopic pregnancy is one which would have deeply concerned me had I too been in that situation . I would certainly be grateful to the surgeon and any medical advice and treatment given . I trust that these days are behind now ?
The numbers given on abortions certainly will include those who have had to terminate due to medical complications , but the figures being so high suggest that abortion is used as a last resort method of contraception for the irresponsible and unthinking. The former being a very small number by comparison.
Secondly
I used the term Sin because I know about it better than any attribute I consider myself to have. I note that you see it as a “religious term” I see it as my condition , to the point where there is no trust or confidence in any ability or achievement that I gain for myself. I am flawed to the point where a thousand psychiatrists could spend a lifetime in diagnosis and still not find a solution. I have to say however , the solution found me , not in religion , but in grace, upon grace , upon grace in Jesus Christ.

Forgive the analogy , but your rejection of Christ is not dissimilar to those we have discussed and who have rejected the life within , and for many that comes at great cost !

I see that you live in South Africa . Here in the UK we have witnessed the death of the High Street , and seen not just the small man, but the giant retailers crumble one by one leaving decimated stores for the charity sector. The rising beneficiaries and trend bucker’s have been the betting shops . You can now bet in the UK 24 hours a day. Even in the smallest of towns such places are open from 9 am until 10 pm. Inside such establishments there are machines that can make you a fortune , or suck you dry . The latter is less preferable !
Throughout the morning our TV channels compete to advertise any number of Bingo and lottery competitions under the illusion that everyone’s a winner! We have a European lottery an Irish lottery , a national lottery , a Post Code lottery , a NHS lottery and every kind of prize draw under the sun and you tell me that society doesn’t put nurture and education before money? The most prominent of all sporting managers once said that television commands sport . He was wrong . It is controlled by the bookmakers who dictate when a game should be played, fight to be fought or race to be run to the maxim of his clientele . The UK could easily be seen as Las Vegas on speed , were it not so , so sad !
If betting is not for you and you are under the impression you can sing , or have some talent that the world’s just got to hear. You to can be a success on any number of shows that suck in momentary mediocrity and spew out the crushed and delusional. “Who cares about them , they were good for a laugh” Our highest rating tv show ( again sponsored by betting groups ) has just been taken off the air because of its cruelty to individuals ,( and the suicide of several) who were mocked and viewed by a public as having less intelligence than the chairs they were provided for sitting on. That remark is not for effect or laughter . That is the sad truth of British Society 2019.

I would not be human were I without emotion , but that emotion has to be reasoned and rational, and above all has to have a rock like proven foundation. In other words , the foundation has to prove to me it can and will support me in my every effort, whether in success or failure. I’d be a mug to trust it otherwise. Jesus Christ does this and more . Prove it ? Perhaps the fourteen year old who met him all these years ago would have difficulty in finding sufficient evidence as to his person , but maybe the old man who picks out the letters with one finger on the keyboard may just for one second make you think differently. I do not necessarily reject out of hand that Jesus existed – was an apocalyptic preacher who was crucified for sedition. In itself such a belief has little or no impact.
I flat out reject the character as portrayed in the gospels. For this character there is no evidence whatsoever.
I am originally from the UK. My mother has said I would hardly recognize the place these days. I suspect people say similar things throughout every phase of humanity.
At least we are not involved in a global war.
Perhaps, as a species, we need to work through all these negative things you list so we can eventually come out the other side as better, more empathetic people?

“Shutting down the biological functions of reproduction”: when an otherwise healthy body system is suppressed, there is the question of what knock-on effects that has for the body. One example is that hormonal contraception stops ovulation, which in turn stops the production of progesterone, which is required for bone development, mood stabilisation and heart health. Then there is the further question of how the body is negatively affected by the methods used themselves. There is a wide range of known negative effects of hormonal birth control and implants. Instead of trying to medicate fertility we would do a lot better to understand it and work with it in a natural approach.
Ending a pregnancy which will kill the mother comes under the principle of double effect. An ectopic pregnancy is dangerous to the mother and the child will not survive. The necessary procedure is not a direct attack on the unborn. Ectopic pregnancy is often used as evidence that pregnancy can be more dangerous than abortion, when the risk of ectopic pregnancy is greatly increased by…. contraceptive implants.
A few more reasons for abortion:
– stigmatising “another single mum” – made to feel stupid for wanting to parent the child
– stigmatising children conceived through rape as a “rape child”
– coercion or abandonment by a partner
– sex selective abortion, more culture specific
– repeated abortion by an individual in an attempt to normalise the procedure
– the framing of the female body as something inconvenient and defective unless it is medicated or surgically edited
– a way for society to pretend women’s needs are being met when the underlying issues clearly aren’t being dealt with.
