Romans 6 – True Freedom – Praise and Preaching from St Peters

“What is the end of all church-order, assemblies, and worship?  What is a church?  Is it not a company of sinners gathered together, according to God’s appointment, to give glory and praise to him for pardoning grace, for the forgiveness of sins, and to yield to him that obedience which he requires from us on the account of his having so dealt with us?  This is the nature, this is the end of a church”  (John Owen – On Psalm 130)

We had a day looking at Romans 6 – which is an incredible chapter – one man afterwards said that it is now his favourite chapter….!

Morning Service

Sermon:  Romans 6:1-14 – “Dead to sin, Alive to Christ”

Q. 18. What is the sinfulness of that state into which man fell?

A: The sinfulness of the state into which man fell includes the guilt of Adam’s first sin, the lack of the righteousness which he had at first, and the corruption of every part of his nature, which is commonly called Original Sin; together with all actual sins which flow from it.

Remember the Christ did not make this atonement, that you should anger God again; Nor did he die for your sins, you should still live in them; Nor did he clean you, that you should return as a swine to your old puddle again; but rather that you should be a new creature and live a new life after the will of God and not of the flesh.” (William Tyndale)

Evening:

Reading: 2 Kings 6

Sermon: Romans 6:15-23 – “True Freedom”

Take my life and let it be consecrated Lord to thee; take my moments and my days, let them flow in ceaseless praise. Take my hands and let them move at the impulse of thy life; take my feet, and let them be swift and beautiful for thee. Take my voice and let me sing always only for my king; take my lips and let them be, filled with messages from thee. (Frances Ridley Havergal)

We need to bear more fruit for God – it is easy in the midst of a busy life to be distracted from God and loving, to be sound and orthodoxy with a heart that is dead towards God. Paul Barnett.

And this is the song that was referenced at the beginning:
