Abortion, the Church of Scotland and the Media

It is a sad and depressing day when someone who claims to be a minister of the Good News of Jesus Christ, writes to the secular press and attacks the teaching of Jesus Christ. It is little wonder that the Church in Scotland is dying if these are its spokespeople. Ichabod.
This is the second of two letters written in defence of abortion (contrary to his own churches teaching) which the Rev Dr John Cameron has in the Courier.  My response follows:
This is the unpublished letter that I wrote in response to Rev Dr Camerons first epistle to the Courier defending abortion.
Dear Editor,
Rev Dr John Cameron has now added to his many worries the notion that the Muslims, the Catholic Church and the Free Church are about to combine to oppose abortion(letters 14th August).  Apparently he thinks that the reason mothers in the US are more likely to die in childbirth than those in Scandinavia is because of abortion.  And yet the abortion laws in the US are more ‘liberal’ than in Scandinavia?   And how does he explain the fact that women in the UK are twice as likely to die in childbirth than those in Poland – where abortion is much more limited?  The ‘logic’ of his position is not immediately apparent!   What is even more puzzling is that he is a minister of the Church of Scotland whose official position is also against abortion.  The General Assembly declared that  “The foetus is, from the beginning, an independent human being” and therefore it can be threatened “only in the case of threat to maternal life, and that after the exhaustion of all alternatives”.   Maybe before sharing his prejudices and alternative ‘facts’ in the secular media Rev Cameron should check them?  And perhaps he might like to think that as a follower of Jesus Christ he might want to protect the weakest and most vulnerable of human beings – the child in the womb.  Or does he think that Jesus was wrong about that too?
